PROJECT: #SCRAP PLASTIC CHALLENGE
CLIENT: MARINE SOCIETY & SEA CADETS and IMMEDIATE MEDIA

Immediate Media produce a magazine called The Sea Cadet for The Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC) aimed at Cadet parents and volunteers.

OBJECTIVE

I was initially briefed to create a full page editorial illustration for The Sea Cadet magazine to publicise the MSSC’s #ScrapPlastic challenge and show the various steps of how to get involved. The challenge is to encourage cadets to take positive action towards looking after the environment, specifically with regard to the use of plastic.

Having completed the magazine illustration, I was later commissioned directly by MSSC to produce an additional illustration for use on the cover of the #ScrapPlastic activity pack and on the MSSC website & social media.

Pictured below are my initial sketches for both the magazine editorial and the activity pack cover.

For the editorial illustration I was supplied with a draft page layout which included the rough text that needed to be included. I moved the text for the numbered steps around to fit with the flow of the illustration, and then supplied this along with my completed illustration, as a guide for the designer doing the layout/artwork of the magazine.

Following the sketch for the activity pack cover there was a change to the length of the challenge, and the client requested that I include elements relating to fundraising, a competitive aspect and that the challenge was to run through the month of August. I didn’t re-supply a sketch for this, but just adapted the layout whilst working up the illustration.

CLIENT COMMENTS

“After seeing Carys’s work for Westonbirt [see project here] we thought the she’d be a perfect fit for our illustration on Scrap plastic for The Sea Cadet magazine. Carys called me to go through the style that we like and what should be included, then she was able to go away and come up with something we were all very happy with. The process was extremely smooth and quick, and we are so happy with the results. Thanks Carys.”

- Elaine Knight-Roberts, Art Editor, Immediate Media

“Thank you for all your work – the illustrations have really helped bring the campaign to life.”

- Edward Meens, Communications Manager, MSSC
