PROJECT: INSTALLATION GUIDE ILLUSTRATIONS
CLIENT: STOCKHOLM TREE PITS

Stockholm Tree Pits is a startup business on a mission to increase the quality of urban tree planting and help grow bigger and healthier urban trees.

The Stockholm system offers a practical and effective solution for planting trees in hard landscaped areas. They supply the equipment and know-how to landscape architects, engineers, and construction companies throughout the UK.

OBJECTIVE

To create a set of 6 illustrations for use in an installation guide, to show contractors how to install the concrete planting frames and steel aeration wells - the products required to plant trees using the Stockholm system.

The installation guide will be a PDF document to be sent to customers, with the illustrations also being used for posts on LinkedIn.

Pictured below are the completed set of illustrations - I’ve included the full description which will accompany each image for anyone interested in finding out about the system/installation process!

1. Install the planting frame and temporarily fix in place with a ratchet strap

2. Mix the structural soil using an excavator (100% clean stone, 7.5% compost & 7.5% nutrient-enriched biochar). In dry weather the mix may need to be dampened to ensure that the stones get well covered with the compost and biochar. If the mixture is not to be used immediately it should be covered to prevent rainfall causing the compost and biochar to be washed down through the pile

3. Compact the structural soil in lifts of 250mm using a vibrating whacker plate

4. Install the aeration well at the lowest point of the new surface making sure that the lower part of the perforations are just above the structural soil

5. Lay an aeration layer of 200mm layer of clean stone and compact with the whacker plate. Then lay a separation geotextile above the aeration layer and pave above using standard techniques

6. Install the tree in the planting hole. The height of the tree can be adjusted by installing compacted structural soil beneath the rootball. The aim is to have the tree installed so that the root flare is just below the final ground level

The style and colour palette used for the illustrations was developed to tie in with the existing Stockholm Tree Pits branding, which has a clean and graphic feel.

The 6 images will be laid out as an A4 PDF. The sketch below shows how the images will sit together, allowing space for the caption underneath each image

The illustrations were created with the end usage in mind. Different formats would be required for the guide and for social media posts (in this case Linked In). I made sure to allow for extra width in each illustration, so that I could also export a wider version without having to re-jig the artwork.

FEEDBACK

“I’m extremely happy with the illustrations you have produced for me... I think they look fantastic and will really help the contractors install the kit. Their slick look will also make my business look professional.

...I will certainly be in contact if I need any more illustrations in the future.”
