illustration of a canal scene, showing leisure activities and nature/wildlife

Project

Grand Union Canal Transfer

Client

Affinity Water + Severn Trent + The Canal & River Trust

Vision

To secure a sustainable water supply for the future, for everyone who needs it

The Grand Union Canal Transfer is a vital new scheme to bring water from the Midlands to the Southeast of England.

This illustration of a canal-based scene was commissioned for use at the planning and consultation stage of the project to help engagement with local communities, councils and other stakeholders. It features on a wide range of materials: the project brochure, website, posters, postcards and event display banners.

The purpose of the illustration was to highlight just how important canals are for communities and nature. FOR PEOPLE – for relaxation, exercise, being able to enjoy nature, and somewhere to spend time with others, and FOR NATURE– as a natural habitat for a wide range of wildlife and plant species. Clean and unpolluted water is crucial for all!

The illustration was created to tie in with a new brand and colour palette, created by Fred Design

For added value and flexibility

A small selection of elements were extracted from the main illustration for use as stand-alone spot illustrations across print and digital materials relating to the project.

Process

This is my initial sketch, shown to the client for feedback, before working up the final illustration. There were just a few minor changes/additions requested, and I made some small adjustments for stylistic reasons when working the illustration up.

Phase 2 Illustrations – Social Value

I was later briefed to create a new scene illustration and set of 10 spot illustrations to complement the original illustration and feature in the Phase 2 Public Consultation document, website and event materials.

This set were created specifically to highlight the scheme’s social value and potential benefits for the community, which could include STEM programmes for schools and the creation of green/recreational spaces for all to enjoy.
