Project

Bristol & City Life – Hospital Artwork

Client

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) Arts & Culture Team

Vision

To improve the look and feel of hospital environments, for the benefit and wellbeing of staff and patients

The Arts and Culture Programme at UHBW exists to improve the look and feel of hospital
spaces, to partner with civic, cultural and academic organisations, and to provide creative
wellbeing activities for staff and patients.

As part of this, the Arts & Culture Team work with a number of artists to enhance their hospitals and use a range of products that are appropriate for healthcare environments such as wipeable vinyl feature walls, framed prints, printed ceiling tiles, lightboxes and printed hospital screens.

I was commissioned to create a set of 4 artworks with a ‘Bristol & City Life’ theme, and an additional feature wall design which combined all of these into one overall design.

The designs will feature in a developing portfolio of artworks by local artists that can be offered to departments, across all of the UHBW Trust sites as a catalogue. Staff are able to select their preferred designs to enhance their own hospital environments, which may include smaller staff spaces or waiting rooms, for example.

Hospital Artwork

I wanted to create a series of images which capture the essence of Bristol and city life, looking beyond the well-known landmarks and historic places of interest to a vibrant city which offers space to escape, relax and do your own thing.

Organic shapes and glimpsed abstract details combine playfully with a palette inspired by the city’s colourful houses to evoke a joyful and lively sense of place.

A celebration of Bristol in loose graphic style…
