Route map illustration, 'The story so far', for Amplifying Maternal Voices Engagement toolkit, focussed on improving mental health provision for mothers and families

Project

Amplifying Maternal Voices Engagement Toolkit

Client

Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA)

Vision

For every mum and family in the UK to have access to the mental health support they need before, during and after pregnancy

Amplifying Maternal Voices (AMV) was a 2 year project spotlighting the maternal mental health experiences of mothers from seldom-heard communities across the UK, including young mums, single mums, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The aim of the AMV project is to improve mothers’ and families’ access to support for their mental health, and is a collaboration between the Mental Health Foundation and the Maternal Mental Health Alliance – Find out more about the project here

As well as hosting a conference and learning event to break down barriers, a key part of the project was to produce an Engagement Toolkit intended to inspire action and change at a local level.

I was asked to visualise ‘The Story so Far’ – essentially a Journey Route Map, going through the various stages in developing and implementing the Engagement Toolkit, and the continuing process of further learning, evaluation, development and testing.

Accessible for a diverse audience

The Route Map was created with inclusivity and accessibility in mind, using a simplified and friendly drawing style, and incorporating women of different ethnicities to help with engagement and relevance for the often marginalised communities the project is looking to connect with.

Flexibility

The individual illustrations and core section icons were supplied separately, offering much flexibility for use across my client’s print and digital resources, and helping them communicate key messages to their audience.

I was so impressed by how Carys was able to translate our brief into vibrant illustrations which really brought the project to life. The illustrations have been fantastic in helping to tell the story of the project so far in a visual way, including in presentations and blog posts…
